Lado Bai

The Spirit of Bhil Narratives
Lado Bai (b. Badi Bawadi village, Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh) is a prominent tribal artist of the Bhil community, known for her evocative depictions of indigenous life and spirituality. Rooted in one of India’s largest tribal traditions, her work reflects a deep connection to nature, ritual, and collective memory.
Her journey began in humble circumstances, as she moved to Bhopal at a young age and worked as a labourer during the construction of Bharat Bhavan. Painting initially served as a personal refuge, but her artistic potential soon emerged through her dedication to the visual language of her community.
Encouraged to transition from wall painting to paper, she began to document festivals, rituals, animals, and everyday experiences with striking clarity and rhythm. Her works are characterized by intricate patterns, symbolic forms, and a strong narrative quality that brings Bhil traditions to life.
Today, Lado Bai’s art has been exhibited in India and internationally, and she continues to contribute to the preservation and evolution of Bhil artistic heritage through her practice in Bhopal.
