Biography

K.G. Subramanyan: The Maestro of Indian Modernism

K.G. Subramanyan (1924–2016) was a pioneering Indian artist and educator, celebrated for his innovative fusion of traditional Indian art forms with modernist sensibilities. Born in
Kerala, Subramanyan studied economics before joining the Indian independence movement, which led to his imprisonment. He later pursued art at Santiniketan under the mentorship of Nandalal Bose and Benode Behari Mukherjee. A prominent figure in the Baroda Group, he taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, and Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. His diverse oeuvre includes paintings, murals, and children’s books. He was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2012.
