Biography

Dhiraj Choudhury (1936–2018) was an Indian modernist painter and educator, born in Brahmanbaria, Bengal (now Bangladesh). He studied at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, and later taught at the College of Art, New Delhi, from 1961 to 1996. Choudhury’s work is characterized by expressive, dynamic lines and vibrant colors, often depicting socio-political themes and human suffering. He held over 80 exhibitions worldwide, including notable shows in Geneva alongside Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. Beyond his artistic practice, he was deeply committed to mentoring young artists, instilling in them a sense of social responsibility through art.
