Bhuri Bai

Bhuri Bai

Bhuri Bai (b. Pitol, Madhya Pradesh) is one of India’s most celebrated tribal artists, known for her vibrant expressions of Bhil culture and life. Belonging to the Bhil community, one of the largest indigenous groups in India, her work is deeply rooted in tradition yet expressed through a contemporary lens.

She began her artistic journey by painting on the mud walls of her home in the traditional Pithora style. A turning point came when she was encouraged to experiment with paper and acrylics, enabling her to bring the visual language of her community into a modern format.

Her paintings are marked by bold forms, vivid colors, and narrative richness, capturing the rhythms, beliefs, and everyday life of the Bhil people. Through her work, she preserves and reinterprets her cultural heritage for wider audiences.
A recipient of prestigious honors including the Shikhar Samman, she was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021. Today, her art stands as a powerful testament to the vitality and evolution of tribal traditions in contemporary India.
