Biography

Avinash Chandra (1931–1991) was an Indian-born British painter known for his emotive and abstract works. Born in Shimla, India, he studied at Delhi Polytechnic, later teaching there. In 1956, he moved to London, where he immersed himself in European art, drawing inspiration from artists like Vincent van Gogh and Chaim Soutine. Chandra’s expressive use of color and form earned him recognition, including a solo exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1965—the first by an Indian-British artist. His works are held in collections such as the Tate, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Ashmolean Museum.
